How I lost my six pack in one night

How I lost my six pack in a night.

It was 10pm on Wednesday night and my wife was having some small contractions.

1 hour later we left for the hospital and things progressed quickly – very quickly.

As we drove into the car park her waters broke – I’ve been here before so no panic.

Luckily I’ve got leather seats!

She got out of the car and said she couldnt walk.

I thought she was being over dramatic but went to get a wheel chair.

I came back to find her on the floor with an old couple helping her – she told me the head was out.

I was pretty calm and thought I’d take a look – Yes, the head was out!

I put her on the chair on all fours – she couldn’t sit down and pushed her in to the hospital at speed with the midwifes running in my wake.

About 30 seconds later, just as we stepped inside the hospital:

Boom!!

There is new life.

Insane experience!!

From there on – it was a long haul waiting for all the medics to kick in.

We were up all night but what did we eat?

Ironically there isnt many healthy options in the hospital vending machine so we had to make do with:

– Jaffa cakes
– Jelly babies
– A bottle of water each

Was this a good nutrition strategy?

No

Did it get us through the night?

Yes.

What was important though was the pre race meal…….

Sorry pre birth meal.

Salmon, baked potato, baked asparagus and a load of kale.

At that stage we didnt know we were going to face a marathon but I’ve no doubt that that meal along with a health portion of adrenalin got us through.

The lesson for you?

Race nutrition isn’t just what you do during or immediately prior but it starts at least the day before.

Oh, and……..

If you or your wife is pregnant don’t try and be “too cool for school” like me – you might not have as much time as you think.
