Why I gave up Triathlon

imageLast year I was training hard and feeling pretty good in my performance.

The problem was this:

I found that my business was suffering.

I was putting too much into my training, it not just the physical demand but the fact it seemed to be on my mind most of the time.

When I wasn’t training, I was thinking about it, sound familiar?

I was starting to neglect my clients – I just didn’t seem to have enough energy to help them properly and be really focussed on my own training.

I realised something had to go.

I am lucky because I’ve had a pretty successful athletic career and to get there I was selfish, very selfish.

I only worked part time in those days but when I worked I didnt really work, I just did enough so I didnt get sacked.

The training, the racing and the recovery always came first.

You might be there now – don’t worry I won’t tell your boss!

The thing for me is that I don’t have a boss – I am my boss.

It’s amazing how that focuses the mind and stops you sherking.

So, in December last year I decided if I was going to be a great coach to my online clients I must focus myself more on them than me.

That was the only way I could make this a success.

Guess what?

It’s worked.

I still train at least five days a week but if I have to miss a session its not the end of the world because my performance is not my priority anymore.

Is there a lesson in this for you?

I don’t know, maybe – But:

I just want you all to know that I am not a coach who does this job so I can train and make myself better – I’ve already done that.

I am a coach who focusses myself only, on making my clients better.

I’ll have some space for a couple of new clients in a couple of weeks but I’ll tell you about that then.

RECIPE:

Chocolate cookies – yum yum:

300g Ground almonds
120g Butter
120g honey
2 eggs
1 tsp almond extract
1 tsp vanilla extract
½ tsp baking powder
80g 85% cocoa dark chocolate broken into chunks

Method:

Preheat the oven to 180 °C/350 ° F/gas mark 4.
Line tray with baking paper.
Mix the butter and honey together either by hand or using a food processor.
Add the eggs, vanilla and almond extract and mix into a dough.
Add the ground almonds, baking powder and combine thoroughly. Stir in the dark chocolate pieces.
Take a piece of dough, roughly the size of a golf ball, roll into a ball and place onto the prepared baking tray, press down into a cookie shape.
Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown around the edges. Bigger cookies may take longer.
