Let me tell you a little story about my wife Kathryn, who is very slim and always has been and the difference between her and me – I used to be fat.

We met up in a cafe not too long ago for a coffee and she fancied a cake, so did I but I didn’t get one.

I bought her a lemon muffin, one of those with a soft middle – it looked awesome, all 500 calories of it.

Anyway I took over our drinks and her cake.

We were chatting and I kept looking at this muffin.

She hadn’t even taken a bite – “Whats wrong with you” – I asked.

She looked perplexed, I couldn’t understand why she wasn’t eating it. If I had bought that for myself, I would have destroyed it within seconds. It would be almost as if I couldn’t fully relax until it was gone.

Like a primal urge to eat everything in my sight before a competitor came along and stole it from me.

Kathryn doesn’t have that though and I believe that is the number one reason why she has never had an issue with her weight. If you combine that with the fact that she has never been on a diet in her life, it means her metabolism is healthy.

What does this mean for you?

Well……..

You probably have been on a diet and every time we restrict calories we down regulate our metabolism.

Worse still if we combine this with exercise, especially endurance exercise we slow the metabolic rate even more – it’s simply a question of survival.

The body senses less food and more exercise, which will ultimately lead to us wasting away and dyeing, so the metabolism slows.

Kathryn’s metabolic rate then is as good now as when she was born, mine and probably yours isn’t because we’ve dieted and trained hard.

So what can you do?

If I am honest it is always going to be a battle for you and me – Firstly we need to be in control of or food nearly all of the time, only allowing ourselves the occasional planned failure or cheat meal.

You must also learn more about the body and specifically nutrition.

The more of an expert we become, the more control we have and hence the greater the chance of succeeding.
