Did you see it?

Unknown-1Wow, that was some race wasn’t it?

I was just hot watching the triathlon at the olympics.

Being a Brit, it was great to see the Brownlee’f finish one and two – that’s some achievement for a small country like ours.

Is there a secret to their success?

I don’t know but it is very surprising to me that Great Britain are so high up the medal table above far bigger countries, so why?

It’s quite simple, we have massively invested in sport in our country and more than that, we have financially invested in the athletes.

They are funded to train and have a whole list of support staff to make sure they leave NO stone unturned in their pursuit of excellence.

As amateurs we don’t have that same luxury but I am a firm believer that they deserve that chance.

They have more talent than us mere mortals and they work incredibly hard.

We have as a country though always had talented hard workers but it is the financial investment which has made the BIG difference.

The difference between OK and world beaters.

I don’t know what the biggest difference for you would be, probably not having to work or juggle training with family committmens.

Aside from that though?

Do you have a coach to keep you track with your training?

Someone to tell you when to back off as well as work harder?

Having that support can make the difference.

One thing though that is strikingly obvious watching any endurance race is how none of them are carrying any extra baggage.

Sadly the same can not be said of those competing at the amateur level and I don’t think thats because people don’t want to be leaner.

It’s because they don’t know how to train hard and eat well, they need help.

They need to invest in themselves.

They need to educate themselves.

As my Granny used to say to me, “none of us know everything”.

That was a difficult lesson for me to learn as a teenager.

But now as a fully fledged adult – I couldn’t agree more.
