Ironman nutrition

UnknownThe brand “Ironman” is growing massively and so is the level of participation.

Getting info on how to train is relatively straightforward, with free plans on the internet and then the more tailored approach.

One topic which gets discussed a lot on various forums, is nutrition for the event.

What do you eat the day before?

What do you eat on the day?

What do you eat on the bike etc etc

All very relevant questions and many a discussion can be had.

There is however one question which gets asked a lot LESS.

How do I train my body, to better utilise the fuel I have?

A slightly less catchy question, maybe but………

It is far more important than the first 3 questions.

The 3 questions are akin to asking:

What training should I do the week before my event to PB?

Sure the training the week before is important but NOT as important as the training which has gone on the months and years previous!

So what are you doing nutritionally NOW, to make sure you will be in good shape for you race?

I’m not talking about fat loss here but more about developing your bodies ability to be fuel efficient – No body wants to bonk on an Ironman!

Generally it is considered that becoming more fat adapted is of benefit to the ultra endurance athlete – something I agree with.

However that takes time, definitely weeks, maybe even months.

So, deciding 2 weeks before your event that you are going to get your nutrition sorted, won’t work!

You need to do it now.
